Proposed service unit policy

Service units are awarded to recognize work that benefits a region's refereeing program over and above refereeing. A certain number of service units is required for each upgrade in referee certification level at and beyond the Area Badge level. AYSO has a written policy for awarding service units. However, that policy gives the Regional Commissioner considerable leeway in awarding such units. The document proposes a clarification to describe local policy.

For the purposes of Region 109, referees will be awarded service units for work involving at least 2-3 hours continuous effort over and above refereeing activities and receiving referee training. Here is a list of activities that might be considered that are not mentioned in the official policy document. This list is not intended to be all-inclusive:

In order to encourage the development of the Mentoring program, at least one-third of the service units required for any single badge level should be earned through on-field mentoring or observations.

The Regional Commissioner is responsible for awarding service units. He/she may be assisted in this regard by the Regional Referee Administrator and the Regional Director of Assessment.
